After its closure, the old Dubbo gaol, which dates back to 1887, was going to be demolished and an office block built on the prime real estate. The Old Dubbo Gaol was closed as a prison on August 31, 1966.
However, the building started a new chapter when it re-opened as a tourist attraction on December 15, 1974 after extensive improvements by the Old Dubbo Gaol Restoration Committee.
It has now become an award-winning tourism destination, celebrating its 50th year this year.
You can read the whole story in the new book "Sandstone Heart" which was launched at the recent anniversary celebration. The book is available at the Old Dubbo Gaol.
