Long drives to Sydney pay-off for water-polo stars Abby and Declan

Thousands of kilometres a year driving to Sydney and back for two local families have paid-off with their children now starring at national water polo championships in Perth.
Local water polo players, Declan McGregor and Abby Osborne, are competing with their respective University of NSW teams at the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships (AYWPC) in Western Australia.
But both have the best of genes, Declan is the son of Sam McGregor, a three-time Olympian who led our team at London in 2012, while Abby is the daughter of local swim instructor, Cath Osborne who said both are doing great at the championships.
“Declan is in the 16 and under team for boys and Abby the 16 and under team for girls for their University of NSW rep teams,” she explained.
“Because they play in the Sydney comp, we both have to go down to down there at least every fortnight for games at Kensington, or Sutherland, or western Sydney, so it’s a lot of travelling,” she said.
The hours on the road however are being rewarded now with both of their teams at the quarter-final stage having won all four games and having scored goals themselves as centre-backs.
“Both teams are undefeated and top of the ladder, so now they’re in the knock-out stage,” Cath said.
“They’re both 15, and they have to do a lot of their training up here… Declan is school captain of Dubbo College South campus, and Abby is at St John’s College,” she added.
With competition finishing this week, Declan has already been selected in a national youth squad for his age, so we’ll no doubt be hearing much more of their exploits upon their return to the Golden West!
