In the midst of World War II an advance party of First Corps Amm. Sub-Park and the 2/1st Pioneer Battalion of Australian Army corps arrived in Dubbo on a block of land covering around 283 hectares, or 700 acres, on the outskirts of Dubbo – an area that’s more familiarly known these days as the location of Taronga Western Plains Zoo.
