Postcard of the Week: Eilean Donan Castle, Scotland

1 min read

What a magical place. And I adore this photo.

Situated at the confluence of three Sea Lochs, Eilean Donan Castle has been a very important place in Scotland’s history.

Built originally in the 13th century, it became a stronghold for Clan Mackenzie and the clan Macrae during the Jacobite rebellions.

In 1719, the English destroyed the castle with their warships. It laid in ruin for over 200 years.

Then, between 1919 and 1932, Lt. Col. John Macrae-Gilstrap rebuilt the castle to its original design. He, however, added the bridge to allow access to the island on which it was built.

It is now the third most visited castle in Scotland – but has to be the most beautiful due to its setting.

It is one of my favourite buildings and I love to visit it. Each time I go, my photos show a different mood of the castle. A place I love to visit more than once.
