In the late 1880s Dubbo’s population was 3409 people, and most buildings still lay in the square mile grid designed in 1849 to the east of the Macquarie River.
The streets were dusty and wide. Macquarie and Talbragar streets remained dirt but were kerbed by cut stone and blue metal slabs.
